Famous Rivers of India
India is a land of rivers. The rivers are considered sacred here. Many mythological stories and legends are associated with them. In other words these rivers are prayed and looked after in the countries. India has more than 400 rivers. Some of them are:
a. Ganga: This is one of the most sacred and widely known rivers in the country. People from different parts of the world come to take a holy bath in this river. It is considered as sacred and mandatory for every Hindu to a dip in Ganga at least once in his lifetime. The river flows through India, China, Nepal and Bangladesh and has more than 15 tributaries that run through the fertile northern plains of India.
b. Brahmaputra: This River is one of the largest in the World. The Ganga Brahmaputra river basin is the largest in the world. The Brahmaputra is regarded as the son of the Brahma, the creator according to the Hindu Mythology. The river originates from the Kailas Mansarovar Ranges and flows around 3000 kilometres crossing counties of India, China and Bangladesh and finally meets the Bay of Bengal.
c. Yamuna: This River is regarded as the river of Lord Krishna. The river originates from the Yamunotri near Haridwar in the northern Himalayas. According to the Hindu Mythology the source of the river is regarded as Saptarishi Kund. A dip in this river is considered more sacred than Ganges because it is here that Lord Krishna played and spent their childhood. The dip in the river will wash away all your sins and misdeeds and you will move on the path of liberation. The river flows through many Indian towns like Delhi, Agra, Mathura, Vrindavan, etc. Taj Mahal is constructed on the banks of River Yamuna. The ‘Sangam’ at the Allahabad where the river meets Ganga and Brahmaputra is a well-known place in the world.
d. Krishna: This is the longest river in India. The Krishna means as dark in Sanskrit. The river originates in the Western Ghats and finally drains into the Bay of Bengal. The river flows through the states of Maharashtra, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. The river is the source of conflict between these states over the sharing of waters of the river. The water is transparent and sweet and is said to possess many medicinal properties naturally. The waters of the river Krishna are known to excite the bile juices in our stomach.
